Family Therapy

A family is made up of unique individuals each with their own beliefs, values, communication styles and histories, striving to live in harmony and balance within a family system that often requires a set of implicit and explicit standards and expectations. It is then, no surprise that this can get complicated quickly! Family therapy is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and enhancing relationships within a family system

Family dynamics are endlessly complex and it is very rare that we are given a healthy blueprint for how to navigate interpersonal relationships. When we consider the important role family plays in our lives, how as children we learn and grow from them and with them, we develop our morals and values, and learn how to navigate stressors and adopt familial strengths. We are essentially learning how to interact with the world around us based on our experiences with our families.

When breakdowns occur within our family unit, this can cause massive personal stress as well as upheaval to the system as a whole leaving everyone scrambling to get things back to normal. This makes perfect sense when you realize that we are wired to need our families protection and love in order to survive as children! Even into adulthood our brains registered threats to our family system with an intense alarm bells. Navigating breakdowns then becomes very important to us.

But, without the right tools, this can be difficult.

Some of the primary goals of family therapy include:

  1. Improving Communication: Helping family members express their feelings and thoughts more openly and constructively.

  2. Resolving Conflicts: Addressing underlying issues that lead to disputes and facilitating healthy conflict resolution strategies.

  3. Enhancing Relationships: Strengthening bonds between family members through empathy and understanding.

  4. Supporting Individual Growth: Recognizing each member's unique needs and fostering an environment conducive to personal development.

Family therapy offers a unique opportunity for families to heal and grow together. At Simple Courage Counsellling we aim to create a space for open communication and developing understanding and empathy, within which a recipe for reconiliation or a path forward can be found.
